About Our Organization

The Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation seeks to prevent pediatric HIV infection and to eradicate pediatric AIDS through research, advocacy, and prevention and treatment programs.

After acquiring HIV through a blood transfusion and unknowingly passing the virus on to her daughter, Ariel, and her son, Jacob, Elizabeth Glaser was the first person to give a voice to the plight of children with HIV. She personally changed the way the world thinks about AIDS. Following Ariel’s death in 1988, Elizabeth joined with close friends Susie Zeegen and Susan DeLaurentis to create a foundation with a simple but critical mission: to bring hope to all children with HIV.

Guided by the ground-breaking results of our research, the Foundation that started as three moms around a kitchen table is now a leading global provider of programs to prevent the transmission of HIV from mothers to their babies. But prevention is only half the battle. The Foundation’s programs also extend the lives of those already infected with HIV by providing care and treatment for children and families and by strengthening the health systems in countries where we work.

With a presence in 18 countries, the Foundation has launched and dramatically expanded its international programs to prevent mother-to-child transmission of HIV and provide care and treatment for children and families. As of March 31, 2007, the Foundation is working in more than 1,750 sites around the world and has reached nearly 3.6 million women with access to services to prevent transmission of HIV from mothers to babies.
